Sheep and LambsSilmaril Farm is home to almost 100 breeding ewes and several breeding rams. The flock is made up of many varieties of sheep and include a line of purebred Dorset and Hampshire. We use our Texel and crossbred Texel lines for our meat quality lamb products due to the high carcass quality of the Texels. The remainder of the flock is crossbred ewes of varieties known to produce luxuriant, soft wool desirable by handspinners for use in fine quality, hand-knit garments. Colours range from white to grey, tan to dark brown, and deep black. Fleeces are available for sale on the day of the Fleece and Fibrefest event. Lambs are raised with their mothers until about two months of age. Prior to weaning, lambs are introduced to a wholesome creep feed added to their hay rations. When the spring is in full swing, lambs and their mothers are set into pature but return to the barn each night for a grain ration. All of our lamb used for meat products are sent to Highland Packers in Stoney Creek. The modern, Provincially licensed facilty insures a quality finished product. Lamb can be ordered as a freezer order of a whole or half lamb, cut to your specifications. Please allow at least 10 days notice on any custom order. Frozen cuts of lamb are available at the farm throughout the year.
