Ontario Apples

McIntosh: This Ontario variety originated almost 200 years ago. The McIntosh or "Mac" is a medium sized apple, red in colour with a green background. The flesh is white. It is a juicy, crisp apple that becomes mild and nearly sweet when ripe and very aromatic. Excellent for eating fresh, can be cooked in pies or made into applesauce.

Available to pick in mid September.

Empire: This apple is a relative newcomer, a cross between a McIntosh and Red Delicious which gives it a unique taste. This apple is medium sized and predominantly dark red in colour, striped and blushed, contrasting with a light yellow background. The flesh is juicy, cream coloured, mild in flavour and sweet. It is a high dessert type for fresh eating and also cooks well.

Available to pick from early October.

Red Delicious: The unique shape of this apple makes the red Delicious hard to mistake. The exclusive tapered shape with five distinct knobs at the bottom identifies this dark red apple as a well known favourite. The flesh is creamy white and fine grained. It is a sweet apple, crisp and juicy with a mild aroma. Red Delicious is an excellent eating apple and should not be used for cooking.

Available to pick from early October.

Golden Delicious: This yellow apple is sometimes greenish in colour when ripe. It is a medium to large apple with yellowish flesh that is fine grained and mildly aromatic, crisp and tender, with a sweet, juicy taste. This all purpose apple is good for eating and cooking.

Availble to pick from early October.

Idared: This late season variety is a cross between Jonathan and Wagener varieties. It is a medium to large size apple, uniform in shape and solid bright red when ripe. The flesh is firm and white, somewhat acidic and tart at picking time, but mellows and improves with storage. This apple stores for a long time under proper conditions. This apple is good for cooking and eating.

Available to pick from mid to late october

Crispin/Mutsu: This apple is a cross between a Golden Delicious and the Indo varieties. It is Japanese in origin. The Mutsu is a very large apple that is green to yellow and maturity and sometimes has a orange blush. The flesh is firm, very dense in texture and very juicy. This apple is excellent for eating fresh and for baking.

Available to pick from mid to late October

Honey Crisp: The Honeycrisp apple was produced from a 1960 cross of Macoun and Honeygold apples as part of the University of Minnesota's breeding program. The goal in creating this apple was to develop a variety that could withstand difficult winters without losing fruit quality

The skin is mostly red with a yellow background, while the surface has shallow dimples and dots; flavour ranges from mild to strongly aromatic, depending on the degree of maturity; flesh is cream-coloured and coarse. This apple is great for fresh eating and baking.

Available to pick from mid September. First picking in Fall 2007.
